Some other things to think about is that barcode scanners usually are laser, CCD, or Infared these days. The laser scanner can only read 1D barcode which in 75% of applications is fine. 2D scanners usually called full Imagers are available too. A linear imager just reads 1D. Symbologies like 3 of 9, 128, and UPC make up most of the 1D market.
In the last few years, the popularity of 2D has gotten greater which requires an imager. Literally it takes a picture in most cases and can recognize the 2D barcode. The Datamatrix andPDF417 are the symbologies you will see the most. The government uses the
Datamatrix barcode technology in most of its UID specification, adopted by most
federal groups.
